Endodontics

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with diseases and injuries of the soft tissues inside a tooth. A root canal is a procedure whereby the pulp is removed from a tooth damaged or dead and the tooth is cleaned, filled and sealed. The pulp is deep in the tooth and contains blood vessels and nerves standing in the middle of the tooth root and communicating with the jawbone.

When is a root canal needed?

A root canal treatment is needed when the tooth’s pulp is infected or inflamed. The procedure removes the pulp and the tooth is cleaned and sealed to protect the tooth.

Symptoms for endodontics

  • Tooth discoloration or darkening
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods/liquid
  • Inflammation near affected teeth or gums
  • Unexplained pain in your mouth or jaw
  • Lingering tooth pain

Diagnosis

A thorough examination together with dental X-rays will allow your dentist to determine the source of pain, trauma or infection and if a root canal treatment is the best solution.

Treatment (Technical)

The dentist will start by preparing, isolating and numbing the part or region of the affected tooth. Then, the dentist makes the smallest possible opening to expose the dental root canal and the damaged pulp. The pulp is extracted, and the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. Once the tooth is cleaned, it is filled with a dental filling and sealed with a dental crown. Even with proper endodontic treatment, the treatment can fail. There can be multiple factors that can affect a root canal treatment outcome such as a vertical fracture, overfilling, or the existing infection was not completely removed.
