Crowns & Bridges
Most crowns and bridges consist of fixed prostheses. Unlike dentures, which can be taken out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and only a dentist can remove them.
A crown is used to entirely cover a damaged tooth. Furthermore, it can be used to improve the appearance, shape and tooth alignment. A crown can also be placed on an implant to achieve the shape and functional structure of a tooth. It is possible to match the color of porcelain or ceramic crowns with their natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and are recommended for back teeth. It is common to use porcelain bonded to the outer face of a metallic crown, thereby providing a strong and aesthetically pleasing restoration.
The dentist may recommend a crown to:
- Replace a large filling when there is not enough tooth
- Prevent a weakened tooth from fracture
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Place a bridge
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
- Cover a tooth that has undergone a root canal
If you are missing one or more teeth, the dentist will recommend a bridge. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ).
Bridges are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth, and occupy the space left by them. Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space. These teeth, called abutments, serve as anchors for the bridge. Then binds a replacement tooth (missing space), this is called pontic tooth, and joins the crowns that cover the abutments. As with the crowns, there are various materials. The dentist can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth or teeth, its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. The color of porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to that of your natural teeth.
